You will hardly find a child or adult who will refuse candy. Rather than buying candy from the store, you can now make candy at home. Here are two types of recipes – recipes that kids can use under adult supervision and recipes that are slightly more time consuming and sophisticated for adults who want their sugar fix.
Making candy with kids can be a fun and learning experience that both you and your child will love. Try these really simple recipes this holiday season.
These are delicious candy spoons that kids will love to lick. Just supervision is needed when melting the chocolate. This simple yet yummy recipe barely takes a few minutes to put together, and a great way to spend some quality time with your tiny tot!
- 1 cups chocolate chips
- Plastic spoons
- Peppermint, sprinkles, M&M’s or any fun and decorative topping
- Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Stir well until the melted chocolate is smooth
- Dip the plastic spoons in the melted chocolate until evenly coated
- Tap lightly on the bowl’s edge to remove excess
- Place the spoons on wax paper
- Sprinkle with chopped peppermint
- Let the chocolate spoons set before handing them out to the kids
2. Candy Apples
Candy apples are not just for Halloween. They can be eaten anytime. You can ensure that your kids get their candy fix as well the nutrients from the apples. This is yet another simple recipe that older kids can try on their own. Help them however in melting the chocolate! These fancy apple treats are great for backyard sales!
- Mini apples
- Popsicle sticks
- Chocolate chips
- Wash the apples well and wipe them dry
- Insert the popsicle sticks into each apple make a firm handle
- Melt the chocolate in a double boiler
- Hold the apple by the stick and twirl it in the chocolate to form an even coat around it
- Place on wax paper and allow the chocolate to set
3. Chocolate Clay
Chocolate clay can be used as play-doh as well as to eat. Now, which child wouldn’t love this dual benefit? Allow your lil angel, to play with this dough and take a bite or two as they roll them into delicious delights.
- 16 Oz chocolate frosting
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- 2.5 cups powdered sugar
- Mix the chocolate frosting and peanut butter until completely combined.
- Add powdered sugar and continue mixing till the sugar is incorporated into the mix
- Hand children cookie cutters to cut shapes in the chocolate clay.
Candy Recipes for Adults
These recipes though a tad bit more complex, can still be fun to make and mouthwatering delicious. Try them for yourself! These candies are a tad bit difficult to make but can be served as an alternative to a rich dessert.
1. Homemade Lollipops
Lollipops are not the domain of kids. Even adults can enjoy them with their kids.
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup light corn syrup
- 1/4 tbsp flavored oil, such as watermelon or lime
- 4-inch long thin sticks
- Lollipop molds
- Grease the lollipop molds and aside
- Add water, sugar, honey and corn syrup to a boil in pan. Continue cooking until the temperature of the mixture reached 295 degrees. Add the flavored oil.
- Continue cooking the mixture until the temperature reaches 300 degrees and then start pouring into the lollipop molds.
- Insert the sticks and allow the mixture to set. This should take about 15 minutes.
- Your homemade lollipops are ready to give your candy fix anytime and anywhere.
2. Brown Sugar Praline
Pralines are easy to make, as long as you don’t burn the sugar while caramelizing. Try them you will love it for sure!
- 2 1/2 lbs light brown sugar
- 1 stick + 3 tbsp butter
- 12 Oz evaporated milk
- 2 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 lbs pecans, chopped roughly into pieces
- Take wax paper and grease with butter
- Combine the brown sugar, salt, evaporated milk and butter in a large pan and bring to boil. Cook until the mixture begins caramelizing.
- Remove from the heat and add the vanilla extract and chopped pecan nuts. Mix well with a wooden spoon.
- Drop spoons of the mixture onto the greased wax paper and let it cool.
- Store in airtight containers. The praline will stay for around 2 weeks.
3. Coconut Macadamia Truffles
Truffles are the ultimate treat for the taste buds and the coconut and macadamia in this recipe heightens the pleasure even further.
- 8 Oz white chocolate
- 5 Oz dry-roasted and salts macadamia nuts
- 2 tbsp dark rum
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 1/2 unsweetened desiccated coconut, shredded
- Grind the white chocolate using a food processor and then transfer to a bowl
- Finely grind the macadamia nuts then
- In a skillet, bring the cream to a simmer. Remove from heat and add rum to it. Then add white chocolate and whisk until the chocolate melts, forming a ganache.
- Pour the nuts into the ganache and whisk well.
- Pour the mixture into a plastic-lined baking pan and refrigerate for 4 hours until firm
- Invert the firmed ganache and remove the plastic wrap. Cut into squares and mold them into balls.
- Roll the balls into desiccated coconut and chill.
- Store in the refrigerator. The truffles will stay for about a week.
