Accessibility

We have been selling candy online since 1997, and we would like the store to be usable by anybody who turns up — including people browsing with a screen reader, people who never touch a mouse, and people who lean on magnification or voice commands. Here is an honest picture of where things stand.

Something in your way? Tell us

Send a note to customercare@candydirect.com. Let us know which page you were on and roughly what happened. And if the store flat out will not let you place an order, mention that too — we will happily put the order together at our end and send you the receipt.

What we are aiming at

We work toward WCAG 2.1 at Level AA. WCAG stands for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, which is the yardstick nearly everyone uses for this sort of question.

Where we have actually got to

We are partway there rather than all the way. A good deal of the store clears that bar; a few corners do not. In the formal language of the guideline that makes us partially conformant, and saying so seems more use to you than declaring ourselves finished and leaving you to find out otherwise.

Things we have sorted out

  • Buttons, links and boxes you type into all report what they are for when a screen reader reaches them, flavor and size pickers on a product page included
  • Every part of the store can be reached with the keyboard alone, and whatever you have landed on gets ringed so you can see it
  • There is a jump-to-content link, so you need not wade through the menus each time
  • Each page states that it is written in English, which stops screen readers mangling the pronunciation
  • Pictures come with written descriptions, and the merely decorative ones are marked to be skipped over

Still on our list

  • A few buttons and links land under the recommended size

This store is also being rebuilt from scratch, and clearing the bar above is one of the conditions the replacement has to meet before it goes anywhere near live. We look the store over periodically and rewrite this part as matters shift.

Paying

The payment pages belong to Shopify rather than to us — their software, their code, and they publish their own notes on how accessible it all is. Get stuck at that stage and emailing us is the quickest way through.

How often we check

Once a month, plus any time we change something, the pages go through automated checks against the machine-testable parts of the guideline named above. Those checks are nowhere near exhaustive, which is why we would far rather hear from you than have you give up.

We deliberately do not bolt on one of those floating accessibility widgets. They do not make a store conformant, whatever the sales page claims, and we would sooner spend the effort on the pages themselves.
